Two Million to Deport?

Deportation Truck

Zimbabwean deportees at the Beitbridge border post in hot uninsulated tin trucks.

Many times in a single day, the deportation trucks cross the boarder. Sending illegally immigrant Zimbabweans from South Africa back home. As they sort out the papers at the boarder, the deportees roast in the sun. They scream from within. “We are burning in here, move this truck!” They bang on the truck and yell out as loudly as they can- but no one is listening.

“Still, they arrive in South Africa at the rate of thousands a week.”
- BBC, September 2007

It is said there are anything between 2 million and 3 million Zimbabweans living in South Africa right now, many of them illegally.
