ReFRAMing my Mental Pictures

When you grow up on an educational diet of British text books, you may be excused for believing that there are no other heroes in history except for those that sailed from English ports.

A visit to the Fram museum will reshape your thoughts about polar explorations and get you wondering what else you don’t know about the contributions of other nations to the amazing history of humanity.

How was I to have known before today that Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) is the most famous Polar explorer ever? That “Fram”- the ship that Nansen and crew used to cross the Arctic ocean- is the world’s most popular polarship.

Fram, the ship, is present in the museum and is a wonder to behold.

If you’re into this sort of thing you’ll love the stories of another Norwegian Roald Amundsen (1872–1928) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roald_Amundsen), Englishmen Captain Robert Falcon Scott (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Falcon_Scott) and Sir Ernest Shackleton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Shackleton).
