Skating on Ice, Starring on TV

On the ice at Vestkanten

I was still a kid when I first saw ice-skating on TV. From that time I wanted to try it out. Today, many years later I got the chance- and ended up skating on Norwegian National TV! A 15 minute bus trip from town, through two tunnels, and past lots of water took us to Loddefjord, a suburb in Bergen. There is a mall there called Vestkanten and one of its attractions is an ice skating rink.

Ice is tricky. Ice is really tricky. Seven hard falls taught me that lesson in a difficult to forget way today. By the end of it all though, both Shingie and I were quite steady on the ice…

Remember Jeanette? She’s the friend who took us on a tour of Fram, Kon Tiki, the Folk Museum and Holmenkollen. She’s the one whose family showed us what a traditional Christmas dinner is like. Well, today she turned from tourist-guide- cum-Christmas-eve-hostess to ice-skating instructor. Thanks to her, we now have ice skills!

And! There is an interesting twist to this story. As we stepped gingerly onto the ice we noticed that one of the Norwegian TV stations, NRK1, was filming a news piece about the rank…

Somehow, they filmed us and we ended up on the news! Check it out here.
