Water Story Opens at Theatre in the Park
Water is a vital source of life - second to oxygen in importance. Since the spirit of a city is believed to reside in water what happens when the city wakes up to the sound of dry taps and barren clouds. The Water Story looks at the lives of three housemates and their desperate attempt to survive the water crisis.

Raisedon Baya’s play tells of Zimbabwe’s ongoing water crisis. The play centers on three main characters, Khaya, Bafana and Rush who highlight just some of the uncomfortable, embarrassing and humiliating trials and tribulations of not having water. Taking a bath, answering natures call, or driving a car is a challenge because of the water crisis in Zimbabwe. More than just politics, the play also associates the water crisis to the ancestors, the gods and other spirits, as well as God Almighty himself.
Raisedon Baya is a prolific writer, producer and director of the arts in Zimbabwe. Based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s Ndebele capital, Raisedon Baya has written extensively on social ills that have befallen Zimbabwe over the years. A co-writer of Zimbabwe’s first theatre production to be banned, Super Patriots and Morons, Baya has not stopped using his pen as a voice for the many voiceless Zimbabweans – too afraid that should they speak, they will not only be left voiceless, but become faceless too. Raisedon believes that the survival of the arts is solely in the hands of the local artists.
While many Zimbabweans would like to challenge the leadership of the country, many are too afraid for what might become of their families and them. Rather, they cower in fear and watch as basic human rights are stripped away from them. Their only source of hope is in writers like Raisedon Baya who are not afraid to be heard, to be seen, and on the hundreds of brave artists who will bring the scripts to life.
Performing in this drama are Aleck Zulu as Rushmore and the Mayor, Nomalanga Sibanda plays Khaya and the Woman, Leonard Phiri plays Bafana and the Minister while Gift Chakuvinga plays the Water Vendor and Councilor. The cast is a combination of new and mature talent. Gift is fairly new to stage acting, while Nomalanga is a NAMA award winning actress for her role in The Naked Truth in 2005.
The producers of the play expect that many residents of this country will debate this issue extensively, in the hope that they make a declaration also to be heard – to voice their opinions, and to use the platform that Theatre in the Park offers to have their say – and hope for a positive response.
