Mud and skills are the two words that I would use to describe the Castrol 4×4 Jamboree at Donnybrook Park on 24th and 25th May 2008.

I was moved to the core by Chiyedza Nyahuye’s performance in “Telling HerStory, Warrior Women of Zimbabwe”. This is a powerful play whose message begs it to be acted over and over again so that more people can see, hear and understand.
Chiyedza takes her audience on a journey through three hundred years of uncelebrated Zimbabwean women- and to a destination of triumphs dotted through the three centuries. She paints a poignant picture of strength and contribution often unseen and undocumented by those who write the books of HisStory.
And on this journey she plays many roles. At times she is the legendary spirit medium Nehanda, at others a grade one pupil in just independent Zimbabwe, 1980.

Stop phobing on my people
Throw the xeno out the window
The power lies in higher seats
Leave the stools alone
These are benches of strife
Of long worn souls seeking refuge

The scene is a haberdashery shop in downtown Harare. They stock the usual stuff: buttons, ribbon, pins, etc. It’s hardly the place where you would find clothing labels such as Wrangler, Tommy Hillfiger and Cherokee. but a man comes in and asks for five Wrangler “labels”. The shopkeeper unflinchingly reaches under the glass-top counter and pulls out five pieces of square cloth. The customer takes out Z$5 million (about 3 US cents) and walks away happily with his labels.
All of a sudden it hits me. He’s a tailor and will immediately multiply the value of whatever pair of jeans he sews by adding the “Wrangler” label to it. I stand there agape and taken aback. (more…)

HIFA 2008 came to rousing close on the evening of Sunday 4th May. The final main stage act, Tuku and Friends featured legends Louis Mhlanga, Steve Dyer and Tuku’s son Sam.
Another capacity crowd jammed into the Harare Gardens arena and went crazy when Tuku and his outfit stepped onto the stage just after 2030hrs.
Even as the show was beginning, outside the arena, a thriving black market was selling tickets (which cost Z$250m at the box office) for Z$1 billion…

I discovered last night that my skin colour is a mix of bistre, sepia and raw umber.
I was writing a poem to someone very special when I came upon the need to use a word that said “brown” but in a more specific way. I wanted to describe skin colour of a particular shade and I needed a word that captured the exact tint of brown I meant. (more…)

There is something about Freshly Ground’s music and style that I can’t quite put my finger on. Something almost familiar- like “I know this music. I have grown up with it. It’s a part of me” and yet so different, new and exciting.
That certain something was present in explosive proportions tonight when they performed in front of one of the biggest audiences ever seen at HIFA. Over 5,000 people crammed into the HIFA main arena. (more…)
