“Teeth” to Premier at Theatre in the Park

By Rooftop Prootions

Theatre in the Park’s latest serving is Alex Magaisa’s heart wrenching, haunting and refreshing “Teeth”.

A keen writer on matters pertaining to the law and politics, Magaisa has put his thoughts to paper in a different way, and has scripted a remarkable, timeless piece of art, which will be narrated, analysed, debated, discussed and hopefully performed for many years to come.

Simply entitled “Teeth”, this timeless play tells of the impact of violence and torture that has befallen African soil. In a most refreshing style of writing, the play depicts how violence dehumanises both the perpetrator and the victim, yet to the end, tries to capture the individual’s relentless pursuit of African humanism (hunhu/ubuntu), the idea that “I am because you are”, that everything is written by the same Hand.

The three characters in the play are nameless, and simply referred to as X, Y, and Z. Cast to portray characters X, Y and Z are the vastly talented Blessing Hungwe Tafadzwa Muzondo and Zenzo Nyathi.

X and Y, played by Zenzo and Blessing respectively are brought together by fate. Both are victims of violent acts and try to make sense of their situation. Z, played by Tafadzwa Muzondo is the author of violence and is haunted by his violent past. Daves Guzha directs and produces the piece and set design is by Eugene Marillier whilst lights are by Mada Nepiyala.

The story is of the lives of men and women, both physical and spiritual, whom fate has brought together by the circumstance of violence and pain. It is an expression of the dehumanising effect of violence wrought by man against another as represented by the characters that refuse to be named and remain nameless yet simultaneously retain a yearning for friendship and community.

Various civic organisations and churches have been invited to exhibit during the run of this play, which premiers on the 12th June and opens to the public on Friday the 13th June, 2008. This tragic drama has no age restriction, but parental guidance will be recommended for younger viewers, where some text might be too descriptive, but this only constitutes for about two percent of the entire play. However, children under the age of sixteen will not be allowed into the exhibition space, as the images might be disturbing.

There are no special prices for this show, as tickets are being sold for 1 billion dollars only. The production runs till the 28th of June with no shows on Sundays and Mondays. People working in the CBD are invited for a new timeslot introduced at 1.00pm, with the usual 5.30pm shows. During the winter season, Theatre in the park does not run a 7.30pm show.
