Weaver Press launches two great compilations

Rumbi Katedza and Irene Staunton

Thursday 2nd October- yes that was the date. The venue was The Book Café. The crowd was really writer studded: Shimmer Chinodya, Blessing Musariri, Fungai Machirori, Sabina Mutangadura, Rumbi Katedza, Chief K Masimba Biriwasha, Ethel Kabwato, Vivienne Ndlovu, Outspoken and Comrade Fatso were some of the faces I recognised.

I spotted two University of Zimbabwe Arts Faculty lecturers, Memory Chirere and Ruby Magosvongwe (I will keep my promise).

The reason that we were all here drinking free wine and meeting old buddies and fellow artists was the launch of Weaver Press’s two newest books- Laughing Now and Women Writing.

I’m getting married in the sun

Shadow of spinsterhood

I’m getting married in the sun! But I’ll put my make up on in the the dimly lit rooms of a township in Zimbabwe. I’m getting hooked up in the rain! But I’ll be beautiful through the day! I’m getting married with the wind as witness. Make sure my tiara is firmly set.

Quickly, quicky, with that mascara! I want to rush out tinofara!

Out in the dust the children play

Out in the dust the children play

It’s a new day for Zimbabwe. Out in the dust the children play. Still hungry. Still teacherless. Still pocket moneyless. We are waiting for the ink from the signing to seep through the paper, seep through the meetings and meetings- through to their tummies.

Doing hair in Harare

Doing hair in Harare

Looking for answers

Church meeting outside

They are looking for answers.  In expensive church buildings on Sundays, praying loudly. Out in the open dressed in white. In the pages of Holy books. From the pulpits of charismatic preachers. On TV channels dedicated to matters of the spirit. On tapes and CDs and DVDs. (more…)
