I long to take a bite of the bread, That's baked from the wheat that I produce, I long for that smile, That was stolen from me before I was born, I long to see the light, yes the true light, These candles are far too dim, Give me what I deserve, That is all I want, Let me have what my hard work merits, I do not want your gold and silver, I want just to be able to live, To be able to feed my children, To see them smile and see them grow Not to mourn as they die of starvation, Let me enjoy the subtle pleasures of life, That's all I'll ever need, O I long not to be the victim of your hypocrisy, Not to be used for your selfish gains, I long, I long- let me long no more, Let my children neither cry nor hunger again, Let my people for once, truly be free; For the prison walls that surround us, Are not built by heartless outsiders, Yes maybe they provide the bricks, But the walls are built by our brothers and sisters, And only they have the hammers to bring them down, They have the power to set us free, To give us a taste of that bread that is ours, To end all our longings with one command: But till that day of fulfilment is come, We have the power only to hope- Yes the longing is long, but so is our patience, Yes the struggle is hard, but so are we.
