The meal is delicious tonight,
But of the two dishes that are laid out,
One is totally untouched,
The other is touched- but only slightly,
She licks the food once then walks away,
Tail between her legs, head held low,
And she wonders where her partner is now,
In all her simplicity how is she to know?

Little boy looks down at the dishes,
Shakes his head from side to side,
Gets on his knees and strokes the dog,
She whines to let him know she's sad,
Tears form in both their eyes,
Both their hearts are heavy as lead,
Then the boy speaks with a shaky voice,
'Yes Ranger, Rover is dead.'
